Yifan Wu on "Reactive Vega: A Streaming Dataflow Architecture for Declarative Interactive Visualization" (https://idl.cs.washington.edu/files/2015-ReactiveVega-InfoVis.pdf) with another relevant language design paper and brief mentions of the predecessor, D3.
Yifan tells us: "As frontends increase in data sophistication, many innovative programming models, architectures, and algorithms have been proposed to enhance performance and simplify programming. Through a database lens, this talk aims at highlighting connections between backend and frontend ideas that all shed light on "data centric programming". In addition to the frontend focused papers on Vega and d3, some database ideas to be sampled include stream processing, lineage, and consistency."

Yifan is a graduate student at UC Berkeley researching topics at the intersection of databases and human computer interaction, currently investigating asynchrony and consistency for interactive visualizations. She has given talks at conference workshops and StrangeLoop.
